Spooky Sprint

Every year, the fourth Saturday of October is celebrated as National Make-A-Difference Day, a national day of service where individuals all over the country participate in events and community service to better their communities and our nation.  UW is certainly no exception to this remarkable day.

This Saturday, Oct. 22, from 11am-230pm, we will be hosting our second annual “Spooky Sprint,” a community-wide service event to raise needed items for the domestic violence safe shelters around the state in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence is an issue that affects everyone and occurs at staggering rates nationwide.  Nationally, 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime (Tiaden & Thoennes, 2000) and women aged 20-24 are at the greatest risk for nonfatal intimate partner violence (Bureau of Justice Statistics, Dec. 2006).

In Laramie, the Albany County SAFE Project, a local domestic violence/sexual violence shelter, met with 236 new domestic violence clients and helped file 26 domestic violence protection orders.  On campus, 11% of UW students reported being in an abusive relationship (ACHA-NCHA II Survey, 2011).  We know that domestic violence is one of the most underreported crimes in the nation, so it is safe to assume that domestic violence issues are affecting a large portion of our local community.

The Spooky Sprint seeks not only to collect donations for the state crisis shelters, but also to raise awareness about domestic violence, what it looks like, and what students can do to help a friend who is in a violent relationship.

So what exactly is going to happen at the Sprint?

Volunteers will break into teams of 4-5 people.  These teams will race around Laramie with grocery shopping carts collecting canned goods and other necessities to be donated to domestic violence crisis centers around Wyoming and to the Laramie Interfaith Good Samaritan Food Bank.  Laramie’s “Tree District” will be targeted for the event, but all community members, including children, are invited to participate either by joining students in the race or donating goods.

Prizes will be awarded for the teams that collect the most items, as well as teams that have the best costumes!  That’s right!  COSTUME CONTEST!  It’s almost Halloween after all, so we might as well find one more day to wear that fantastic Halloween costume.  Who knows?  You might win a prize!  (Please keep costumes family friendly).

So, what can you do to help out?

  • Participate in the Spooky Sprint!  You can sign up individually or with a team at or join volunteers at 11am in the Wyoming Union.  This is a great activity for all ages and Halloween costumes are encouraged, so bring the whole family!
  • Review the list of needed items and set them aside for collection on October 22nd.  If you will not be home, or are not living in the “Tree District” near UW campus, just call or email Maggie Moran at 766-3117 or to arrange for collection.  If you live on campus, there are boxes located all over campus for your donations.  Boxes are located at the following locations:
    — STOP Violence Office (Knight Hall 118)
    — SLCE Office (Union)
    — ASUW Office (Union)
    — Greek Life Office (Union)
    — Residence Life/Dining Services Office (Washakie)

So, get excited about the Spooky Sprint, dust off your sneakers, and grab your costume, and do something great for your community this Saturday.

Once again, those event details are:
